Three pass trek is combined trip with three high passes above 5000m Khongma-La(5535m.), Cho-La(5420m.), Renjo-La(5360m.) pass in the Everest region of Nepal. It is an ideal choice for a true adventure seeker looking for a challenging trek in Everest region which involves crossing high mountain passes. The trek starts from Lukla after 35 minute of flight from Kathmandu through Khumbu valley. during the trek we walking along the river, forested hillsides, moraine, Glacier and exploring beautiful Sherpa heritage with Sherpa-run hotels, Buddhist culture and the beauty of nature around us.
According to our trip itinerary, the first pass via Khongma la pass visit to khumbu glacier, Everest base and Kalapathar to have closest view of Mt. Everest, the second pass via Chola pass visit to gokyo valley, Gokyo lake and Gokyo Ri, then the last pass Renjo la pass is for the spectacular panoramic view of the mountain above 8000m.(Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-oyu) and many more famous climbing peak below 8000m. like Ama-dablam, Thamserku, Khangteka, Kongde peak and so on. the sun rise and sun set view from kalapathar over the top of the world Everest and gorgeous view of Gokyo lake, panoramic mountain view and Ngozomba glacier from Gokyo Ri and third pass(Renjo La pass) will be unimaginable. Detailed Itinerary
Day 1. Arrival in Kathmandu.
Pick up from the international airport and transfer to hotel.
Day 2. Flight to Lukla (2850m) and trek to Phakding (2610m)
We go to Kathmandu Domestic airport to take a nice short flight to Lukla, Tenzing Hillary airport the start point for the trek to EBC. We will see many beautiful mountain ranges such as Langtang and Jugal ranges, then the Rolwaling Himal and Mt. Gaurisankar, before getting to see the first view of Mt. Everest on the flight. We make a short stop in Lukla to sort out bags etc before setting off. It’s a nice short walk for the day, 3hrs walk through low rhododendron forest, small villages and farms. We will pass through many big and small Mani Stone, Chhortens and Prayer Wheels which are built to offer good luck for all the living beings we will set to Phakding for lunch and we have all afternoon to take a food rest or look around the Phakding town which lies along the banks of Dudh Koshi.
Day 3. Trek to Namche (3440m) 6hrs walk.
After early breakfast at the lodge, we trek to Namche following with the bank of Dudh Koshi river. We will get a good view of Thamserku Peak 6623m. On the way and we go pass small villages and farm. Walking along a path with many ups and downs, crossing a stream we with reach to a village called Monjo at 2840m gaining 230m more from Phakding. We stop for lunch here. After lunch, we go the rough the National Park entrance gate where we pay our N.P. entrance fees. We carry on walking on the bank of Dudh Koshi river for 45 minutes to an hour and then we start ascending uphill towards Namche, start with crossing big and tallest suspension bridge on Khumbu valley. While ascending uphill we reach to rest joint called Top Dada where you will get the first view of Mt. Everest. From here you ascend gradually up to Namche Bazar. Then we get to Namche and we will gain the altitude proximately 800m.
Day 4. Namche Excursion
It is an acclimatization day, so we’ll take a gentle walk to gain a little height and have a free afternoon. Your guide/ leader will take you to a couple of wonderful viewpoints to see the spectacular view of Lhotse, Nuptse, Everest, Amadablam etc. You should also be able to the monastery at Tengboche and the trails to Everest you can also visit couple villages of Khumjung and Khunde with their health post, school started by Sir Edmund Hilary.
After lunch, you are free to go around Namche Bazar where you can see lots of different shops and it is a good place to get a souvenir. You will see the trader with a big group of Yak. You can also visit Namche Monastery. The monastery is about 80years old and has beautiful Thanka painting of Tibetan deities. You can also visit the Sherpa museum lies just above the Namche town. There can see the photo gallery of many famous mountaineers and record holders’ photos and the Sherpa museum shows all the things and utensils use in Sherpa houses in the old days. Namche is the biggest town or market place in Khumbu region where people from different places come to trade their goods.
Day 5. Namche Dibuche (3830m.)
You should now be acclimatized. We move closer to Everest through its spectacular national park. The trail flattens after we get of Namche Bazar. We walk pass small villages with tea shops and walk before lunch should be nice and smooth with good views around. We descend towards Dudh Koshi river again and reach to lunch place called Phungi tanga. We stop for lunch and take a good short rest before ascending uphill all the way to Tengboche monastery through beautiful pine forest and rhododendron. We might see mountain Thar and beautiful national bird Danphe, musk deer and Red panda if we are lucky. After about 3hrs walk we will reach to Tengboche farmhouse in the whole Khumbu region and ask for good hike blessing from senior Lama of the monastery. After visiting the monastery, we will continue downhill walk to Dibuche about 20min and stay overnight at Dibuche.
Day 6. Dibuche – Dingbuche (4410m) 5hrs
We start our day by walking through the rhododendron forest to the Imja Khola, where we walk across the exciting bridge at Imja Khola and along the Mani stone wall to reach the village called Pangboche. Above Pangboche is the tree line so, our route then continues through summer pastures. We will continue our walk for 20-40 min and we get at the lunch place called Shomare where we stop for lunch. After lunch we ascend gradually uphill towards Dingboche kind weather would allow us enhancing the view of the Amadablam one of the beautiful mountain and other mountains to our right most of the day. After walking about two and a half hours we will get to our camp Dingboche by gaining an altitude of approximately 590m.
Day 7. Dingboche Excursion (acclimatization day)
We take another acclimatization day (break) at Dingboche to cope with the altitude we have gained so far. As with any acclimatization drills, hiking to higher point Nagarjun-Ri getting down to spend the night is recommended. Hiking uphill to Nagarjun-Ri gives us breathtaking views of Amadablam along with Makalu, Tawche, Lhotse, Nuptse and Island peak.
Day 8. Dingboche- Chhukung
We begin our trek to Chhukung by walking through stone called fields, Imja Khola valley before walking in Glacier moraines. On our wall, we will be surrounded by beautiful snow-capped Mt.Later beyond Bibre village we see Island peak so the closer the trail ahead is intersected by the streams and continue to Chhukung by walking half an hour from Bibre we will gain-altitude by approximately 300m. from Dingboche.
Day 9. Chhukung – Labuche (4910m.)
We start early in the morning with plenty of water and some snacks and a planned lunch as there is no lodge on the way. We walk around 8-9 hrs from Chhukung to Lobuche by passing Khonma la (5535m) from the pass we can see the panoramic view of Mt. Amadablam, Makalu, Baruntse, Nuptse, Island peak and some other mountain. After the pass, we descend to straight down about 2 and half hour to Khumbu Glacier through the moraines and we walk through the Khumbu Glacier to Lobuche. This first Khongma La pass makes our trip more adventures and experience. We spend a night at Lobuche.
Day 10. Labuch- Gorakshep(5140m.)
We start our day slowly again following the Khumbu Glacier northwards to Gorakshep the pathway is mostly rocky and Glacier so we want to take our time and more slowly with beautiful scenery around us. After gradual ascend for 3hrs we reach to Gorakshep with gaining altitude by 250m. and Gorakshep will be our last camp. We stop for lunch and after lunch the excitement becomes too much and we set off to our final destination, Everest base camp again we walk along the Glacier and moraines for two hours and we actually start walking on the Glacier it left for about hours to EBC from base camp we get fantastic views of the Khumbu icefall which one of the most difficult traverses for those attempting to summit Everest. We take good time at base camp to look around and take pictures and then we turn back to Gorakshep for the night.
Day 11. Gorakshep-Lobuche 4910m. (via Kala Patthar)
We have to make an early start to climb up to Kala Patthar to get a fantastic view of sunrise Everest and other mountains. It will take 4-5hrs to get to the top but worth going at the top of Kala path we will see the panoramic view of the different mountains and Khumbu Glacier all the way down to Lobuche side. Then we will slowly return down back to Gorakshep for breakfast and we will move down to Lobuche for the night.
Day 12. Lobuche – Zongla (4830m)
From Lobuche, we start our day after breakfast and we walk through gradually flatten pathway to Zongla for 4-5hrs. we arrive there for lunch and camp for the night as there are no tea houses in between on we get good views of Cholatse peak, Arkhmtse, Tabuche peak, Cholatse lake and trail way to Chola-pass.
Day 13. Zongla- Gokyo(4790m) via Cho-la pass toward Cho-la-pass(5420m)
The path on the way is rocky and bit steep uphill leading to snow and blue ice just before getting on the of the pass. At the top of Cho-la pass, we spend few minutes to look around the good views of the peak our 8km such as Everest, Lhotse, Cho-oyu, Nuptse and some other peak like Thamserku, Khagteka and Pumori etc. After enjoying the view, we carry on heading all the way down to Thangnak for lunch, after lunch at Thangnak we slowly move Towards Gokyo. On the way from Thangnak to Gokyo, we walk through Nozumba Glacier till we reach Gokyo and stay our night at Gokyo.
Day 14. Gokyo (Excursion/rest day)
During our Excursion/rest day we hike up to Gokyo Ri early in the morning for 3hrs. from where we get fantastic Panoramic views of all the mountains in Everest region like Everest, Cho-Oyu Makalu, Nuptse, Lhotse, Gejangkhong, Amadablam and some after enjoying the time at Gokyo Ri we walk down to the hotel/lodge at Gokyo and have lunch. After lunch, you will have a free afternoon to rest or you can walk around the Gokyo lake.
Day 15. Gokyo-Lungden (4368m.) via Renjo la pass (5360m)
We start early in the morning to walk towards Renjo la pass with plenty of water and some snacks. The path till the top of the pass is rocky and slightly uphill and we spend for a minute at the top and enjoy with the best panoramic and Gokyo lake then we walk down to a place called Lungden for lunch and where we spend a night. Lungden is such a beautiful valley with Sherpa people settlement.
Day 16. Lungden- Namche
After breakfast at Lungden, we start our day and we walk gradually down to the beautiful Sherpa old village called Thame. We stop at Thame for a lunch and before lunch at Thane we walk 2hrs bypassing old Sherpa settlement in between Namche. Till Namche, we walk gradually flat along the forested pathway and across some beautiful Sherpa villages with Sherpa-run tea houses and stay overnight at Namche.
Day 17. Namche- Lukla 5-6hrs The last hike
We are now back to below the tone line, the scenery has changed back to beautiful pine forest and rhododendron we start going downhill to all the way down by Dudh Koshi river crossing the tall suspension bridge will lead us through the many small village or towns like Jorsalle Monjo and all the down to Phakding for lunch break. After the break, we start gradually up till we get to Lukla the place where we started our trek and it is time to celebrate our last night of three pass trek thanksgiving time and time to say goodbye to our rest of the trekking new such as potters and guide.
